STARKVILLE – In a historic moment for Mississippi State University’s women’s golf program, The Bulldogs have earned a number one seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs will be the No. 1 seed in the Westfield Regional in Westfield, Ind. and they will play at The Club at Chatham Hills. Regional action will be played May 8-10.
Led by head coach Charlie Ewing and assistant coach Lauren Whyte, the 2023 Bulldogs secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. They earned one of the top spots in the field after an impressive season that saw the Dawgs ranked inside the GolfStat top 10 much of the year.
Joining Mississippi State in the Westfield Regional will be Oregon, Vanderbilt, Iowa State, Virginia, Tulsa, Tennessee, Michigan, Oregon State, Xavier, Lipscomb and Morehead State.
The Bulldogs are one of four SEC teams to earn a No. 1 seeds in the tournament. Joining MSU as a top seed is LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M. In total 13 SEC schools made the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Throughout the season the Bulldogs have consistently placed well in competitions and with a team stroke average of 295.62, the Bulldogs were consistently among the top performers in the SEC. MSU captured three team championships this season, including going back-to-back championships in the Mason Rudolph Championship and Blessings Collegiate Invitational. Most recently, State captured the team title at The Show in Las Vegas.
The team has been led this season by Julia Lopez Ramirez who won the SEC Individual Championship. Lopez Ramirez led the SEC with a very impressive 70.31 average with 29 rounds played all while capturing two more individual crowns to add to her illustrious young career. Senior leadership has also been a key for the Bulldogs this season. Senior Hannah Levi came alive in the second half of the season, capturing five straight top-25 finishes to end the year. Senior Abbey Daniel has been an essential part of the Bulldog’s starting five throughout the year as well, giving the team nine rounds of par or better golf with a top-10 finish in The Ally.
