Sampson Zheng Earns Top-10 Individual Finish For Second Straight Year
STANFORD – Sampson Zheng secured an individual top-10 finish with a 1-under par 69 in the final round and the California men’s golf team finished in eighth place at the Pac-12 Championships on Sunday at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears shot an 11-over 361 in the final round and rounded out the 72-hole, three-day tournament at 16-over par.
Tournament host Stanford, which was tied for third after 54 holes, pummeled the field with a fourth-round 4-under 346 – no other team shot better than 3-over par on Sunday – and won the team championship by 13 strokes at 19-under par. Cardinal golfer Michael Thorbjornsen (-15) shot a fourth-round 68 on Sunday and claimed individual medalist honors.
Zheng finished the tournament with a 3-under 277 and tied for 10th individually at Pac-12s for the second consecutive year. After shooting an opening-round 72, Zheng went under par the rest of the way, climbing at least nine spots on the individual leaderboard each round. The junior tallied an eagle on hole 1 on Sunday as well as birdies on holes 5 and 17. Fellow junior Aaron Du (-1) also finished under par and tied for 15th.
Freshman Nathan Wang had Cal’s second-best round on Sunday with an even-par 70, which helped him climb 12 spots on the leaderboard.
