SALT LAKE CITY – Utah junior golfer Javier Barcos has been granted a spot in the NCAA’s Morgan Hill Regional, it was announced on Wednesday.
“I’m really excited for Javier,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “He’s a great player and this is a great way for him to be completing his year!”
Barcos’ earned this opportunity after putting together a season that saw him collect a pair of top five finishes, including his first tournament victory, craft a team-best stroke average of 71.4 and post the second-highest finish ever by a Ute at the Pac-12 Championships.
The junior from Spain logged his first top 10 finish of the year at the Hamptons Intercollegiate in October, then put together a phenomenal performance a week later at the Oregon State Invitational, going 4-under in round one and shooting a 1-under 70 on the last day to regain first place and capture his first win as a Ute.
Barcos put on another impressive showing to tie for 10th at the Desert Intercollegiate in March, but he was even better when the Pac-12 Championships arrived at the end of April. His third-round 64 matched the team’s best score of the season and Barcos would finish the competition at 8-under to take fourth, ahead of 11 players ranked in the top 100 nationally. That also goes into the record books as the second-highest finish ever by a Utah golfer at the Pac-12 Championships.
The regional, which will consist of 54 holes, will take place from May 15-17 at The Institute Golf Club in Morgan Hill, Calif. The low individual at the regional will advance to the finals on May 26-31 in Scottsdale, Ariz.
