Utah Golf’s Javier Barcos Preparing to Tee Off at Morgan Hill Regional

SALT LAKE CITY – Having put together a junior season that has seen him craft the best stroke average on the University of Utah men’s golf team, achieve Second-Team All-Pac-12 status and post the program’s second-highest finish ever at the Pac-12 Championships, Javier Barcos is now preparing to compete at the NCAA’s Morgan Hill Regional, which will be held from Monday through Wednesday at The Institute golf course in Morgan Hill, Calif.

Barcos is the first Utah golfer to qualify for regionals as an individual since Kyler Dunkle in 2019, who also reached the NCAA Championships that season. This will be Barcos’s second consecutive season year competing at the regional championships, as he was part of a Utah squad that reached this event in 2022 and he finished the competition 3-under and tied for 11th.

The highlights of Barcos’ 2022-23 season that earned him this opportunity include posting a pair of top five finishes, netting the first tournament triumph of his career at the Oregon State Invitational in the fall and earning the second-highest finish ever by a Ute at the Pac-12 Championships, taking fourth.

The junior from Spain collected his first top 10 finish of the year at the Hamptons Intercollegiate in October, then put together a phenomenal performance a week later at the OSU Invitational, going 4-under in round one and shooting a 1-under 70 on the last day to regain first place and capture his first win as a Ute.

Barcos was again on his game at the Desert Intercollegiate in March, tying for 10th, but he was even better when the Pac-12 Championships arrived at the end of April. His third-round 64 matched the team’s best score of the season and Barcos would finish the competition at 8-under to take fourth, ahead of 11 players ranked in the top 100 nationally. That also goes into the record books as the second-highest finish ever by a Utah golfer at the Pac-12 Championships.
