FLOSSMOOR, Ill. – Fighting Illini men’s golf head coach Mike Small secured his place in the 2023 U.S. Senior Open Championship on Tuesday, carding a 1-under 71 to tie for medalist honors and earn one of two qualifying spots at Flossmoor Country Club.
Small, and Miguel Angel Martin of Madrid, Spain, finished atop the 75-player field in a tight race that saw eight other competitor finish within two strokes of two advancing spots.
Small will now compete in his third U.S. Open Senior Championship, after qualifying for spots in the major championship in 2016 and 2017. The 2023 U.S. Senior Open Championship is set for June 29-July 2, at SentryWorld in Stevens Point, Wis.
Small’s latest on-course success comes amid yet another deep postseason run for the Illini men’s golf team. Just weeks after guiding his squad to their 13th straight Big Ten title, the Orange and Blue finished second at the NCAA Regional in Bath, Mich., and the No. 3-seeded Illini are now set for a return to the NCAA Championship, where they tee off starting Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., in their 14th appearance in the last 15 championships dating back to 2008.
