All Four Current Tar Heels Advance At U.S. Amateur


All four current University of North Carolina men’s golfers competing in the 2023 United States Amateur have qualified for match play after stroke play Monday and Tuesday in Colorado at Cherry Hills Golf Club and the Colorado Golf Club.
 
Maxwell Ford shot 6-under 66 today at the Colorado Golf Glub to tie for fourth place at 6-under 137 in the 312-player field. Ford shot 71-66 to finish one back of the co-medalists – Blades Brown, Sampson Zheng and Jackson Buchanan – who finished 7-under 136.
 
David Ford shot 4-under 68 today to tie for 26th place at 2-under 141 (73-68).
 
Austin Greaser and Dylan Menante were among 15 players tied for 50th at even-par 143. Greaser played Cherry Hills today and shot 72-71 over the two days, while Menante played at the Colorado Golf Club today and shot 71-72.
 
The low 64 players advance to match play, which begins Wednesday with 32 head-to-head matches at the Cherry Hills Golf Club.
 
Maxwell Ford made four birdies and eagled the 598-yard par-5 16th hole today to shoot 6 under. His 66 was the fourth-best round in the field on Tuesday. His brother, David, made six birdies in his second round.
 
Wednesday’s matches will be streamed on Peacock from 5-6 p.m. Eastern and televised on the Golf Channel from 6-8 p.m.
 
Maxwell Ford plays against Brian Stark of Texas, David Ford plays William Walsh of Pepperdine, Greaser plays Jonas Baumgartner of Oklahoma State and Menante plays Caleb Surratt of Tennessee.
