Jimenez Leads the Way for Utah Golf on Day Two in Stockton

STOCKTON, Calif. – Sergio Jimenez matched the lowest round by a Ute during the 2023-24 season and the University of Utah men’s golf team recorded a score of 5-under, putting them in third after the second round of the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational, which took place on Tuesday at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton, Calif.
 
“Sergio played great,” said head coach Garrett Clegg. “Other than that, we had a rough day, especially over the final few holes. We were in a good spot, but struggled to finish the last four holes. We are in a good spot going into tomorrow’s final round still, but we need to really bring it.”
 
Jimenez’s 6-under 66 goes into the books as the freshman’s lowest mark in his young Utah career and matches an identical mark put up by Davis Johnson twice at the Husky Individual Invitational in September.
 
Jimenez started his day with four consecutive pars, then went birdie, eagle, par, birdie on his next four before a bogey put him 3-under on the front nine. Three more birdies gave him a matching score after the turn and moved him up eight spots into sole possession of third place. No golfer in Stockton posted a better Tuesday score than Jimenez, who is 10-under for the tournament and just two strokes out of first.
 
Joining his teammate in the top 10 is Javier Barcos, who owns a share of ninth at 6-under after carding a second-round 71. Barcos was at his best on the front nine, shooting a 2-under 34 that included birdies on the second and sixth. He added another on the par-5 16th and racked up 13 pars to enter the clubhouse at 1-under.
 
Barcos will enter Wednesday’s final round aiming to secure his third straight top 10 finish, a feat not achieved by a Utah golfer since Blake Tomlinson put together three straight top 10 performances in the spring of 2021.
 
Davis Johnson matched Jimenez’s total of a team-high five birdies in round two, posting four over his final 13 holes, a stretch in which he was 2-under. Johnson’s 36-hole mark is 3-under and he’s in a tie for 23rd.
 
Braxton Watts and Brandon Robison both added to Utah’s tournament-best eagle total, which now stands at six, twice as many as any other team in the competition. Watts is 1-over and owns a share of 42nd, while Robison is in 65th. Playing as an individual, Peter Jung was 1-under in the second round and is deadlocked…
