Men’s Golf Closes Fall Strong, Takes Second at Cal Poly


CARMEL, Calif. – The UCLA men’s golf team tied for second at 16-under 848 to close the Fall 2023 season at The Cal Poly Invitational at The Preserve Golf Club on Tuesday.
 
Junior Omar Morales, who claimed a medal in the Bruins’ last tournament at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, placed runner-up at 9-under with scores of 70-68-69.
 
The Bruins owned a one-shot lead at 14-under after 36 holes before California stormed ahead in round three with a 12-under 276 to win in a landslide at 21-under. The Golden Bears’ Kuangyu Chen earned medalist honors at 10-under.
 
Morales birdied 16 times across his three rounds and bogeyed just once in his final round today.
 
Also in the top 10 was freshman Luke Powell who tied for third at 8-under 208. Powell shot UCLA’s lowest individual 18-hole score of the tournament with a 6-under 66 in round two. His second round featured an eagle on the par 5 8th, five birdies and just one bogey. Through his first four collegiate tournaments, Powell has shot a team-high six rounds in the 60s. He placed first, third and t-3rd in three fall events.
 
Graduate Mason Greene closed 2023 with his best finish of the fall with a t-25th mark at 2-under 214. It was also his first under-par finish this season. Greene finished round one in a tie for third following a 4-under 68, good for his lowest 18-hole score of the season.
 
Pablo Ereño tied for 46th at 3-over 219 (74-73-72) and freshman Luciano Conlan tied for 67th at 8-over 224 (74-74-76).
 
The Bruins go into hibernation for 10 weeks before beginning their Spring 2024 season. UCLA’s will resume play at The Copper Cup, scheduled from Jan. 14-15, 2024, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club.
