JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The Illinois women’s golf finished the Briar’s Creek Invitational tied for fourth after carding a 54-hole team total of 873 (+9), including a third and final round total of 301 (+13).
Isabel Sy earned co-champion honors for the second-straight tournament and also recorded her sixth-straight Top 5 finish.
“After playing this tournament for the past three years, I was confident I had the course knowledge I needed going into this year,” Sy said. “On the first day, it was just about using my energy wisely to last me all 36 holes. I was able to capitalize on several birdie opportunities and make good putts. Today, I was able to push through all the way until the end and made my last putt to tie for the win.”
“I’m so grateful to be in this position once again and to the people who were with me along the way. I cannot wait to use what I have learned from today and apply it to our preparation for our future tournaments.”
Sy posted a 2-over 74 in her final but her decisive birdie on No. 18 helped her to her share of a four-way tie atop the individual leaderboard. The senior becomes the first golfer in program history since her head coach, Renee Slone, in the 1992-93 season to secure back-to-back individual medalist honors. Sy’s 12 birdies during the tournament were second-most among the field and her 3.97 (-1) scoring average on par 4s was also second lowest.
“Another outstanding tournament for Isabel!” Slone said. “She had a strong day one and made a lot of pars today. Her first birdie of the final round came on No. 18…..what a way to cap off the round!”
Yurang Li placed tied for 25th after her third round of 74 (+2). Li carded three birdies on the front nine to give her a tournament total of nine.
Erica Lee finished tied for 34th after a 73 (+1), collecting three birdies along the way, going over-par on just one hole.
Lexanne Halama placed 44th after a third round score of 82 (+10) and Anna Ritter placed tied for 53rd after a final round 80 (+8). Ritter’s 4.67 (-4) scoring average on par 5s during the tournament was tied for third lowest.
Sophia Sulkar, competing individually, placed 90th after her final round 77 (+5).
Michigan State took home the team title at 4-under (860) with the Spartan’s Katie Lu and Brooke Biermann, along with NC State’s Lauren…
