Wildcats Welcome Field of Teams at Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. – Tucson Country Club will host the 44th annual Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate as the 14-team field will tee off on Monday, March 18. The Wildcats will look to regain their victorious ways after winning their home tournament five years in a row before narrowly dropping last year’s event to Texas A&M. Arizona has already secured one tournament win in 2024 with a 20-under par win at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai’i.

“With great Tucson weather welcoming all of the teams this week, it should be a fantastic environment at Tucson Country Club,” said head coach Jim Anderson. “TCC is in exceptional shape, and our guys are itching to get out and compete again. The teams coming in are going to be tested, and we’re really excited to put on a great event and showcase our new home at Tucson Country Club.”

Coach Anderson will play a lineup that consists of Tiger Christensen, Yannick Malik, Zach Pollo, Sam Sommerhauser and Johnny Walker. The five-man group has amassed a total of seven top-10 finishes this season, including Christensen’s record-breaking tournament win at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup during the fall. Christensen and Walker also finished in the top 10 in last year’s Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate, finishing eighth and third respectively.

The Cats have been a force to be reckoned with in 2023-24 with five top-five finishes in seven tournaments. In addition to its win at the Burns Intercollegiate, Arizona has a pair of runner-up performances that include setting a new program record with a 50-under par team score at the Arizona N.I.T. in January.

Arizona’s home event at Tucson Country Club will also be an opportunity to showcase the new William M. “Bill” Clements Golf Center, which will be the new home of both golf programs when it opens this spring.

The Arizona Thunderbirds Intercollegiate will feature 54 holes over two days with the first two rounds being played on Monday. The event is open to the public with free admission.
