Cal Jumps Five Spots On Final Day In Arizona
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The California women’s golf team enjoyed another fantastic finish on Saturday to close out the PING/ASU Invitational, jumping up five spots over the final 18 holes at Papago Golf Course to tie for second place.
Four Golden Bears saved their best round for last as they carded a 7-under 281 as a team, good for the second-best score out of a 17-team field that included eight top-15 ranked programs. Carding an 8-under 856 for the tournament, Cal finished in a three-way tie with No. 4 UCLA and No. 13 Arizona State, while No. 11 Northwestern took first place at 11-under 853.
After settling in 53rd place individually following Thursday’s opening round, Adora Liu (74-71-67 – 212) turned things around in a big way. The sophomore turned in the best round of her collegiate career on Saturday with a 5-under 67, becoming the fourth Bear this season to come within one stroke of the program’s 18-hole record (-6). Liu ended the tournament as the Bears’ leader in eighth place, earning her team-leading fourth top-10 finish this season.
Also placing in the top 10 just one stroke behind Liu was freshman Constance Fouillet (68-73-72 – 213). Fouillet recorded an even-par 72 to close the tournament at 3-under, claiming her second career top-10 finish.
For the second time this season, Cristina Ochoa (72-72-71 – 215) registered a par or better score in all three rounds of a single competition, shooting 1-under 71 on the day and 1-under 215 for the week to place 18th overall. Fellow senior Rina Tatematsu (71-74-71 – 216) finished in 21st place thanks to her second 1-under 71 of the competition.
The Bears have made a habit of finishing strong this season, saving their lowest team score for the last round in four of their last five events. This was the fourth time in eight tournaments this season that they finished in the top three.
Cal returns to the Bay Area for its next action in the three-day Silverado Showdown on April 8-10.
