Men Finish 21st at The Goodwin

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (March 30, 2024) – Washington State men’s golf closed the book on The Goodwin with a 21st-place finish among the 31-team field following a 3-round score of 27-over, 867.

In the final day, the team recorded their best round of the event, shooting a 2-over, 282 behind a pair of under-par performances from sophomore Sam Renner and senior Preston Bebich.

Renner wrapped up the event at 3-over, 213 to finish in a tie for 33rd place. In Saturday’s round three, he finished up the front nine at 1-under with a birdie on hole four, and then after making the turn, eagled hole 10 to move to 3-under. One more birdie on hole 17 after a couple of bogeys down the stretch put him at 2-under 68 in the final round on a stellar day.

Bebich ended tied for 68th place at 8-over, 218 following a final round score of 1-under, 69. His first nine holes were identical to Renner’s, parring eight holes around his birdie on four, and then he went even on the back nine behind a couple of birdies and a pair of bogeys.

Redshirt freshman Ben Borgida used a 5-over, 75 final-round score to place tied for 92nd at 10-over, 220. He opened the day with a birdie on hole one, and scattered another birdie and three bogeys over the rest of the front nine. On the back end, he would birdie the 14th hole, but three bogeys and a double bogey down the stretch put him at 5-over for the round.

Fifth year Pono Yanagi also finished in a tie for 92nd at 10-over, 220. After a hot start to round three with two birdies over his first four holes. But he fell back even over the next few holes before an even back nine, highlighted by birdies on holes 14 and 18, put him at an even 70, his best round of the weekend.

Junior Franklin Lydra wrapped up The Goodwin at 19-over, 229 tied for 154th. He went 8-over, 78 in the final round, scattering a birdie, seven bogeys and a double bogey.

Next up for the Cougars will be The Thunderbird hosted by Arizona State on April 12-13 at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz.
