CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Highlighted by senior Peter Fountain’s 4-under 67, North Carolina took over the lead at the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Golf Championship at Charlotte Country Club on Saturday.
The Tar Heels closed the day at 7-under (277) and currently lead second-place Florida State by three shots. With Fountain’s back-to-back 67s to open the tournament, the Raleigh, North Carolina, native enters Sunday’s final round as the individual leader. Teammate Austin Greaser posted a 2-under 69 and is tied for fifth, while David Ford carded a 3-under 68 and is tied for ninth.
Florida State gained two spots in the team standings and sits in second place with the best team score of the day at 9-under (275). Luke Clanton and Frederik Kjettrup recorded matching 67s (-4) on the afternoon, highlighted by Kjettrup’s bogey-free round. Kjettrup (-7) is alone is second place in the individual standings, while Clanton (-6) is tied for third with Georgia Tech’s Christo Lamprecht.
Georgia Tech remained third in the team standings at 8-under, while Duke gained three spots to fourth and finished 5-under (279). Wake Forest, which closed Saturday at 8-over, fell out of the top four and into fifth place.
Clemson’s Thomas Higgins tallied the best individual score of the day, finishing 6-under-par (65). The Roscommon, Ireland, native totaled seven birdies on the day, headlined by four on the back nine. With his 65, Higgins jumped 36 spots in the individual standings and is now in a tie for 12th.
With rain expected, Sunday’s third-round action begins at 8 a.m. Individual and team results can be accessed online via GolfStat’s “Live Scoring” feature.
