Four Spartans Earn GCAA All-American Scholar Honors


East Lansing, Mich. – Four members of the Michigan State men’s golf team were named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) All-American Scholar list, announced on Wednesday.

August Meekhof, James Piot, Bradley Smithson and Troy Taylor II all garnered the honor, marking the third-straight year at least four members of the team were named All-American Scholars.

To be eligible for GCAA All-America Scholar status an individual must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically in Division I, II, III, and NAIA, or receiving their Associate’s Degree and in their last year of athletic eligibility in the NJCAA. In addition, they must have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I, 78.0 in Division II, 78.0 in NAIA and 79.0 in Division III, 77.0 in NJCAA, and maintain a minimum cumulative career grade-point average of 3.2.

Piot, a three-time All-Big Ten First Team selection and former league Freshman of the Year, finished a brilliant career at Michigan State with the lowest scoring average in program history at 71.99. The 2021 U.S. Amateur Champion, Piot led the team with a 71.45 scoring average in 33 rounds this year. A finance major, Piot graduated from Michigan State with a 3.568 cumulative grade-point average.

Meekhof, a rising junior, was an All-Big Ten First Team selection this past year and earned a spot on the Big Ten All-Tournament Team after leading the Spartans to a runner-up finish. He finished second on the team with a 71.84 scoring average in 37 rounds. An interdisciplinary studies in social science major, Meekhof carries a 3.273 GPA.

Smithson, a rising senior, finished fifth on the team in scoring average at 73.14 in 37 rounds and posted three top-20 finishes during the season. An advertising management major, Smithson carries a 3.363 GPA.

Taylor, who will be returning for his fifth season at MSU next year, finished fourth on the team in scoring average this past year at 72.59 and played in all 13 tournaments for the Spartans. He posted four top-20 finishes, including co-medalist honors at the Island Resort Collegiate with a 7-under par 209 and a tie for 10th place at the Gopher Invitational with a 3-under par 210. An advertising management major, Taylor carries a 3.486 GPA.
