Illini Duo Named Big Ten Preseason Honorees


ROSEMONT, Ill. – Two Fighting Illini women’s golfers were recognized by the Big Ten Conference on Wednesday (Aug. 31) as graduate student Crystal Wang and junior Isabel Sy were named 2022-23 Preseason Honorees.

The pair return to Illinois after helping the team to a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a berth at the NCAA Regionals to finish the season.

Crystal Wang led the team in seven tournaments as top Illini finisher last season, including final three tournaments of the season. She registered eight top-15 finishes: The Landfall Tradition (3rd), ICON Invitational (T-3rd), Lady Buckeye Invitational (T-5th), Big Ten Championships (T-6th), Wolverine Invitational (T-8th), Illini Women’s Invitational (T-13th), Blessings Collegiate Invitational (T-14th), NCAA Tallahassee Regional (T-14th). Her performances earned a Big Ten Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week honor after equaling a season-best third place finish at the ICON Invitational (Feb. 21-22, 2022) and carding the lowest 54-hole tournament total in program history with a 13-under par 203, highlighted by an eight-under par 64 in her final round, which also marked the lowest single round score in program history. The senior led the field with 18 birdies in the tournament. Wang was named to the All-Championship Team after finishing in a tie for sixth place at the Big Ten Championships (Apr. 22-24, 2022) with a two-over tournament total of 215, including a five-under 66 in her second round. The Diamond Bar, Calif., native was named Big Ten Conference Women’s Golfer of the Week after registering her highest finish of the season with a third place showing at The Landfall Tradition (Oct. 29-31, 2021) with a tournament total of four-under par 212 that included a four-under 68 score. She also led all players with 17 birdies in the tournament.

Isabel Sy, a San Gabriel, Calif., native, is coming off a sophomore season where she ranked second on the team with eight rounds under par. Sy posted six Top-20 finishes, including five in the spring: Briar’s Creek Invitational (T-8th), Schooner Fall Classic (T-11th), Columbia Classic (T-12th), Lady Buckeye Invitational (T-12th), Clemson Invitational (T-15th), Big Ten Championships (T-17th).
