Alabama Men’s Golf Set to Compete at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invitational


OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The Alabama men’s golf team, fresh off a tournament victory at the Rod Meyers Invitational last weekend, will return to action Friday at the Olympia Fields Country Club/Fighting Illini Invitational (OFCC). The three-day, 54-hole event will be contested at the Olympia Fields Country Club in Olympia Fields, Ill.

The OFCC Invitational will take place Friday through Sunday, Sept. 16-18, at the Olympia Fields Country Club North Course. The famed par-70, 7,310-yard track has served as host for two U.S. Opens (1928, 2003) and two PGA Championships (1925, 1961).

The Lineup

  • The Crimson Tide’s lineup will be led by Canon Claycomb, Thomas Ponder and Nick Dunlap, who all finished in the top three, respectively, to lead the Tide to team victory at the Rod Meyers Invitational
  • Claycomb started off his senior season by earning medalist honors at the event, finishing six strokes ahead of the rest of the tournament field

    • The win marked the second individual championship of Claycomb’s career, as well as his third top-five and fifth top-10 finish
    • Claycomb recorded a final round 65, marking the third-lowest single round in tournament history and the lowest since 2018

  • Ponder finished runner-up at the Rod Myers Invitational, marking a career-best finish and earning his second career top-five and sixth top-10 result
  • Freshman Nick Dunlap began his Crimson Tide career with a top-three finish, tying for third place at 4-under par 212, including back-to-back rounds of 69 to close out the tournament
  • Junior Simms Abney will compete as part of UA’s starting five for the first time in the 2022-23 campaign
  • Freshman Jonathan Griz will round out the starting five, making his Crimson Tide debut

Tournament Preview

  • The 15-team field features six of the top-10 teams in the country according to the Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches’ Poll, including No. 2 North Carolina, No. 3 Florida, No. 5 Arizona State, No. 7 Oklahoma State, No. 9 Texas and No. 10 Pepperdine
  • Alongside No. 32 Alabama, other top-40 teams in the field include No. 11 Illinois, No. 15 Stanford, No.18 Florida State and No. 25 Arizona
  • Army West Point, Baylor, Indiana and Northwestern round out the tournament field
