Third At Stephens Cup - Stanford University Athletics

JUNO BEACH, Fla. – No. 2 Stanford men’s golf tied for the second-best round of the day at The Stephens Cup to finish in third place at 20-under. The Cardinal started the day five shots off Florida State for second, but its 10-under 278 wasn’t quite enough to overcome the Seminoles and qualify for Wednesday’s championship match. Instead, Stanford will face defending national champion Texas, who finished at 8-under for the tournament, in the consolation match Wednesday at Seminole Golf Club.

For the third straight tournament to begin the season, junior Michael Thorbjornsen finished in the Top 10 with an eighth-place finish at 7-under. He tallied four birdies, an eagle and three bogeys on Tuesday for a final-round, 3-under 69. Two other Cardinal golfers matched his 69: Ethan Ng and Nate Menon. Ng had five birdies, an eagle and four bogeys, while Menon had three birdies, two eagles, two bogeys and a double.

Junior Karl Vilips returned to the lineup and shot an even-par 72 in the third round after withdrawing from Monday’s second round due to dehydration and cramping. Senior Barclay Brown shot a 1-under 71 on Tuesday to finish in the Top 15.

Pairings for Wednesday’s match against Texas will be finalized soon.
