Ty Akabane, a four-time All-Pac-12 Academic Roll member and a WGCA All-American Scholar from Danville, Calif., with eight career top 20 finishes has signed with USC via the transfer portal, Trojan Head Coach Justin Silverstein announced today.

Akabane joins USC after three-plus seasons as a key contributor at UCLA, which included a pair of top 20 finishes earlier this fall. She will have two year of eligibility remaining.

“(Assistant Coach) Tiffany (Joh) and I are thrilled to be able to add a person like Ty to our already stacked roster,” Silverstein said. “When she entered the transfer portal we immediately reached out to her and wanted to speak with her about becoming a Trojan. We have always admired how Ty took care of her business as a junior golfer and a collegiate golfer at UCLA and believe she will be a perfect fit in our athletic department culture. Our entire roster is excited to have Ty join us in January and help us achieve all of our goals as a team.”

Said Akabane: “I chose USC because I needed a new environment that allows me to thrive and succeed both as a person, golfer, and student.  And as soon as I stepped onto campus, I knew this was where I needed to be.

“I am so grateful for this opportunity and it would not be possible without the support of my family, my swing coach Mike Schy, Justin and Tiff, my coaches and teammates at UCLA, and my new USC family. I am so excited for this opportunity and am ready to get to work.”

Akabane was a top student-athlete at UCLA, earning Pac-12 Academic distinction four times in addition to being named to the WGCA All-American Scholar team as a 2019-20 freshman.

This fall, she tied for fourth at the USF Intercollegiate and tied for 18th at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational. She qualified for the U.S. Amateur before the season.

Akabane, who redshirted the 2020-21 season, competed in 10 events as a 2021-22 sophomore with a 74.0 scoring average which included a tie for fourth at Blessings, a tie for 13th at The Gold Rush and a tie for 21st at the NCAA Championships.

As a 2019-20 freshman, Akabane saw action in four fall events, highlighted by a tie for second at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview at 7-under as well as a tie for 11th at the Stanford Intercollegiate.
