JOHNS ISLAND, S.C. – The Illinois women’s golf team ended the Briar’s Creek Invitational in sixth place after carding a third round total of 305 (+517) at The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek.
Crystal Wang posted a final round 75 (+3) to finish the tournament tied for third at 5-under, just one stroke away from being able to claim a share of the individual title. Wang also earned her fourth Top 5 finish of the season and fifth Top 10 finish.
The Diamond Bar, Calif., native also tallied the second-lowest scoring average on par-5 holes at 4.50, putting up a combined score of 6-under. Wang also ended the tournament with 13 birdies, which was tied for the most in the two-day event.
Mattie Frick recorded the best finish of her young career at tied for 25th at 4-over after her final round of 76 (+4).
Isabel Sy and Siyan Chen both finished tied for 32nd at six-over after the pair each shot a third round 77 (+5).
Lexanne Halama ended tied for 72nd after her final round 79 (+7) and Anna Ritter, competing as an individual, placed tied for 75th after a third round 79 (+7).
The Orange and Blue rolled in a total of 44 birdies in the 54-hole tournament, good for second-most among the field.
SMU took home the team title at 13-under and the Mustang’s Michelle Zhang and NC State’s Lauren Olivares shared individual honors at 6-under.
Illinois will be back in action on March 24 in the Clemson Invitational at The Reserve at Lake Keowee in Sunset, S.C. It will be the third time this season that the Illini will compete in an event in the Palmetto State.
