Besard Named B1G Golfer of the Week


ROSEMONT, Ill. – Fighting Illini fifth-year senior Matthis Besard has been named Big Ten Golfer of the Week after leading Illinois to a share of fourth place last weekend against a strong field, which included nine top-30-ranked programs, at the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) in Tucson, Ariz. The Big Ten Conference announced the honor Wednesday afternoon. 

  • Carded rounds of 72, 70, and 67 to finish nearly three strokes below the course average of 72.02 for the week (69.7)
  • Recorded 48 of 54 holes at or below par, including 13 birdies and his last 25 holes played bogey free  
  • Closed as the team’s top finisher (9th) for the first time in his Illinois career, and recorded his first top-10 finish as an Illini
  • Fired a closing score of 67 (-5), his lowest single-round total of the 2022-23 campaign
  • Led the tournament in Par-3 scoring (2.67)

It marks the first Big Ten Golfer of the Week honor of Besard’s career. The honor is the fifth this season for an Illini golfer with Adrien Dumont de Chassart claiming the award on Sept. 21, Jackson Buchanan earning his first nod on Oct. 5, and Tommy Kuhl capturing back-to-back awards on Feb. 15 and March 2.
