Cal Heads To Ping/ASU Invitational

Bears Using New Lineup In Arizona

After a week off from competition, the California women’s golf team heads to Arizona this weekend for the Ping/ASU Invitational. The three-day tournament tees off on Friday at the par-72, 6,543-yard Papago Golf Course.

Cal will be one of 17 teams in action in a field that includes seven programs ranked in the top 15 nationally (Golfstat).

“It’s a new group, so that’s going to be fun,” Cal head coach Nancy McDaniel said. “I think we’re still getting some learning in about our games and how it will match up in the desert. If we can leave here with some good feelings about desert golf, then it’s been a solid week.”

The Bears will be trying out a new lineup for their fourth spring competition, with sophomore Kaylyn Noh and freshman Olivia Lee joining mainstays Annika Borrelli, Cristina Ochoa and Mika Jin.

The latest installment of what has been a stellar junior season for Ochoa saw her place sixth at the Meadow Club Invitational earlier this month. After a slow start for the team, Ochoa shot a 68 in round two, tied for the second-lowest single-round score of the year and one shy of her season-best. Her performance was part of a huge turnaround for the entire Bear squad, which moved up five spots over the last 36 holes to earn its third consecutive top-five team finish.

While Lee makes Cal’s main lineup for the second time during the spring, this will be the first time for Noh. The Rocklin native had her top individual finish of the year tying for 27th at Meadow Club.

Kaylyn Noh did a good job of leading us into this tournament through the qualifying she played in last week,” McDaniel said. “Just really proud of the two new players stepping up in the last qualifier. With Olivia and Kaylyn, that’s always good for a team. It shows depth.”

The Bears are set to tee off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday.
