Sampson Zheng Fires 1-Under-Par 69 In First Round

 SAN FRANCISCO – Sampson Zheng shot a 1-under par 69 to lead the California men’s golf team to a first-round 283 at The Goodwin on Thursday. The Golden Bears are in sole possession of seventh place and just three strokes outside of the top four after 18 holes played at TPC Harding Park.
 
Zheng, who birdied two of his final three holes on No. 7 and 9 to vault up the individual standings, is tied for 14th following the first round. Simon Kwon, Daniel Heo and Papon Sawatyanon – who is playing in his collegiate stroke-play debut as an individual – are tied for 44th at 1-over par. Kwon got off to the hottest start among Cal’s lineup at 2-under through the first nine holes, but fell back with three bogeys through his final nine holes.
 
Eighth-ranked Stanford (-7) leads the 28-team field heading into Friday’s second round. No. 13 Oklahoma (-5) and No. 11 Georgia Tech (-3) are the only other squads under par through 18 holes played in San Francisco.

Cal’s lineup gets started early on Friday with second-round tee times on hole 1 between 8-8:48 a.m. PT alongside Colorado, San Diego and SMU. Sawatyanon and Panay will tee off of hole 1 at 7:48 a.m. and hole 10 at 12:41 p.m., respectively. Live scoring can be followed on Golfstat.com.
