SAN FRANCISCO — The University of Colorado men’s golf team opened in a tie for 15th place here Thursday after the first round of Stanford’s “The Goodwin,” which was completed here Thursday.
Despite 14 teams in the field in the top 75 (and 18 in the top 100), only three teams of the 28 competing scored rounds under par Thursday. Host and No. 28 Stanford turned in the best score, a 7-under 273, with No. 13 Oklahoma in second (5-under 275) and No. 11 Georgia Tech in third (277). No. 35 Washington and No. 66 San Francisco are tied for fourth, all in with even-par 280s.
Colorado, ranked No. 51, got off to a slow start with just two birdies on the first 13 holes, with 23 bogeys; but the Buffs closed strong, moving up six places over the final five holes into a tie with Southern California for 15th place. The four players who scored for CU finished with an eagle, five birdies and 11 pars with just two bogeys to help the Buffs to a 7-over 287 score for the day.
The Buffaloes did not have a player score worse than a bogey on any hole, joined only in doing so by Georgia Tech, Oregon and San Diego.
Sophomore Dylan McDermott turned in CU’s best effort of the first round, a 2-under 68 on the 6,939-yard, par-70 TPC at Harding Park course. In tying for seventh, he recorded just one of 26 rounds in the 60s in the 155-man field. He closed his round with an eagle on the par-5 9th hole (CU started on the back nine), just one of three eagles scored in the round.
It was his 12th round in the 60s this season and his 20th of his career, both CU team-bests.
Sophomore Tucker Clark fashioned a 1-over par 71, tying him for 44th; he had two birdies, both on the front nine including on his last hole (the par-4 9th), 13 pars and three bogeys (all which came on the back nine).
Freshman Hunter Swanson shot a 4-over 74, which has him tied for 98th; he had two birdies and 10 pars opposite six bogeys on Thursday. The birdies bookended his round, as he opened with one on No. 10 (CU’s only one on the entire back nine) and closed with his other on No. 9.
Sophomore Justin Biwer also carded a 4-over 74, as he opened with four bogeys in his first five holes before playing par golf the remainder of the round. He scored nine straight pars before making his only birdie of the round on the par-4 7th hole. The team leader in par/subpar hole percentage (84.7), one birdie is rare for Biwer, but he was joined by 30 other players who had just one Thursday,…
