Gamble cards under par in the first round of the Pac-12 Championship


PHOENIX – Washington State women’s golf sophomore Madelyn Gamble ended the opening day of the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championship in the top 10 on the player leaderboard to highlight the first round of competition for the Cougars.

Gamble was the lone WSU women’s golfer to card under par in the first round of the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championship, which is taking place at Papago Golf Club in Phoenix, Arizona. The Pleasant Hill, California native ended the tournament’s opening round at 1-under 71. Gamble heads into Tuesday’s second round in a tie for 10th on the player leaderboard, as she was just one of 15 golfers to card under par during the first round of the Pac-12 Championship.

As a team, Washington State concluded the tournament’s first round in a tie for 10th with Colorado with a score of 9-over 297. The Cougars head into the second round of the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championship just one stroke behind No. 28-ranked UCLA for ninth and three strokes behind Washington for eighth.

Freshmen Hannah Harrison and Lily McCauley each carded 2-over 74 in their inaugural round of play at the Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championships. Harrison and McCauley head into the second round in a tie for 31st on the player leaderboard. McCauley collected four birdies during her first round of play, tying her with Gamble for the team lead through 18 holes of play at the Pac-12 Championship.

No. 14-ranked Southern California holds a three-stroke lead over No. 29 Arizona at the end of the tournament’s first day. The Trojans shot 9-under 279 in the opening round of the Pac-12 Championship. Stanford’s Rose Zhang sits atop the player leaderboard through 18 holes, as she carded 5-under 67 in the first round.

The second round of the 2023 Pac-12 Women’s Golf Championship gets underway this Tuesday, April 18. Play from the Papago Golf Club begins at 8 a.m. PT, with Washington State scheduled to tee off from 8:56-9:36 a.m. PT.
