Women's Golf Completes Day 1 of Big Ten Championships

PITTSBURGH – Rutgers women’s golf wrapped up play on day one of the Big Ten Championships on Friday afternoon in Pittsburgh at Fox Chapel Golf Club.

As a team, the Scarlet Knights sit in 14th place with a round one score of 311. They are led individually by Leigha Devine, who sits in a tie for 10th place after a 1-over 72 in her first round.

“Fox Chapel is a championship level course and it showed today,” head coach Kari Williams said. “The pins were in difficult areas with a lot of slope and we struggled to make putts in this first round. Leigha did a good job of finding birdies out there and Lu steadied herself at the end to close her round with several pars. Tomorrow’s weather will make the course more challenging for everyone but we have battled tough conditions all spring and I know this team will compete hard in round two.”

Devine’s first round was highlighted by five birdies, the second most of any player in the field. After a double-bogey on her first hole, Devine birdied three of the next eight to make the turn at even-par.  She added a pair of birdies on her back nine to finish with her 1-over 72.

“Today was certainly the toughest test we have faced this year in terms of course difficulty,” Devine said. “The greens were quick and as the wind picked up it became more difficult. Patience was the name of the game today and I believe it’ll hold true for the rest of the weekend. On this course, it comes down to managing mistakes and taking advantage when you get scoring opportunities. I look forward to the weekend with my teammates to see what we can do with two rounds left to play!”

Lucrezia Rossettin is in a tie for 57th after a 7-over 78 in her opening round of the championship. She birdied the second hole and closed out her round with five consecutive pars.

Maeve Rossi rolled in 10 pars to finish her round with an 8-over 79. Rikke Nordvik (11-over 82) and Nicole Ewing (13-over 84) round out the individual performances for RU on Friday.
