Illini Women's Golf Headed to San Antonio Regional

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – Illinois women’s golf team, coming off winning the first Big Ten championship in program history, is one of 72 teams headed to the NCAA Regionals as announced today, April 26, live on Golf Channel. Illinois will travel to San Antonio to compete at TPC San Antonio from May 8-10 as the No. 9 seed of 12 teams.

The Illini are led by Crystal Wang, who earned Big Ten medalist honors with a record-setting 9-under 62 in the final round of the Big Ten Championships at Fox Chapel Golf Club in Pittsburgh. Wang has recorded eight Top 10 finishes this season and has won two of her last three tournaments. She was also named All-Big Ten First team earlier today for the second-straight year and third time overall in her illustrious Illinois career.

This is the sixth-consecutive NCAA Regional appearance and 10th overall in program history, with the 2020 national tournament canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Illini posted a ninth place finish last season at the NCAA Tallahassee Regional and a 13th place finish at the NCAA Columbus Regional two seasons ago. The Illini have advanced to the NCAA Championships once in program history, registering a ninth place at the 2019 NCAA Championships.

Six regional tournaments will be conducted May 8-10 to determine the championships field. Regional tournaments are considered preliminary rounds of NCAA championships competition and all national championships policies apply.

A total of 72 teams and 36 individual participants have been selected for regional competition. Of the 396 players participating in the regionals, 156 will advance to the championship finals, with the top five teams and top individual (not on an advancing team) advancing from each regional.

The NCAA Women’s Golf National Championships will be May 19-24 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., and hosted by Arizona State and The Thunderbirds. The final three days of the championships will be televised live by the GOLF Channel.
