Two Cal Golfers Among Top 20 Through Three Rounds Played

STANFORD – California’s Sampson Zheng carded a 2-under par 68 for the second consecutive round and moved into the individual top 20 during the third round of the Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championships on Saturday at Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears as a team dropped back one spot to ninth place with a third-round 351 and will enter Sunday’s fourth and final round at 5-over par.

Zheng (-3) climbed nine spots into a tie for 19th and Simon Kwon (+2) jumped eight spots to a tie for 34th with his second straight 1-under 69, but the performances were not enough for Cal (351-353-351 – 1055) to gain ground on the top half of the field. Aaron Du (-3), Cal’s top performer so far at the tournament, fell back from seventh to a tie for 16th with a 2-over 72 on Saturday. Daniel Heo (+5) and Jeewon Park (+5) shot identical 71s in round three and are tied for 46th.

Zheng, who is ranked 27th nationally by Golfstat, is 4-under par over the past 36 holes played following a first-round 72. The junior carded five birdies on Saturday, including four in a seven-hole span between 16 and 4.

Colorado (-17) and Washington (-17) are tied atop the leaderboard through 54 holes played after leapfrogging Arizona State (-15). Cal is four shots behind Arizona (+1) and Utah (+1), which are tied for seventh. Stanford’s Michael Thorbjornsen (-13) is the clubhouse leader heading into Sunday, with Colorado’s Dylan McDermott (-11) close behind.
