MORGAN HILL, Calif. – No. 18 Mississippi State leads the field at the Morgan Hill Regional after Monday’s first round, shooting 12-under 276 as a team. The Bulldogs are five strokes ahead of No. 7 Florida State with four Bulldog golfers in the top 10.
State’s first-round team score is tied for the fifth-lowest first round in program history.
“I thought we did a really good job handling the day and focusing on us,” head coach Dusty Smith said. “As a whole, we had five guys in the round and had several guys step up for us. We know there is a lot of golf to be played, so we need to make sure our focus remains on what we can control. We are excited for our new opportunity tomorrow.”
Pedro Cruz Silva and Hunter Logan both are tied for second with Florida State’s Frederik Kjettrup going into the second round at 4-under 68. Cruz Silva went bogey-free on the front nine and carded two pairs of back-to-back birdies in his round.
Logan added four birdies and made an eagle on the No. 10 hole while going bogey-free on the back nine. He also registered his 17th-career round in the 60s, taking sole possession of the fifth-most rounds in the 60s in program history.
Garrett Endicott and Ford Clegg both shot 2-under 70 and ended the day in an 11-way tie for ninth. Endicott went bogey-free on 17-consecutive holes with three birdies on the back nine. Clegg made four birdies on his way to recording his 79th-career round of par or better.
Endicott, in his first year of collegiate golf, is now tied with PGA Tour pro Chad Ramey for the third-most rounds of par or better (21) in a season in program history.
Ruan Pretorius will start the second round for Mississippi State at 9:30 a.m. CT, followed by Endicott, Clegg, Cruz Silva and Logan in 11-minute increments.
