Preston Summerhays fired a 10-under 62 in the opening round of the Las Vegas Regional, taking the individual lead and becoming the fifth man in program history with a 62-or-better card. Top-seeded Arizona State went 26-under 262 (62-64-67-69=262/-26) and holds the team lead from Bear’s Best Las Vegas.
“The guys looked solid today,” said Associate Head Coach Thomas Sutton. “They were ready to play from the first hole and did not look back. We are looking to build on this tomorrow.”
Arizona State has a six-stroke lead on the No. 2 seed and conference rival Stanford Cardinal. The No. 3 seed Virginia Cavaliers sit one back of the Cardinal at 19-under for third.
The Sun Devils paced the field on the four par-5 holes, shooting 19-under. Both of Summerhays’ eagles in the round came on par-5s and every Sun Devil birdied the 507-yard 12th. Of the 20 times a Sun Devil stepped onto the tee of a par-5, there were only three pars and zero bogeys.
Summerhays dazzled, firing two eagles on the front-nine and a bogey-free back-nine. He birdied the first three holes of the back-nine and the last two. Summerhays totaled seven birdies and just one bogey in the round.

“Preston is a superstar and day one of Regionals is the ideal time for the superstars to carry the team,” said Head Coach Matt Thurmond. “That round was ridiculous; ten under with a bogey! I’m glad he’s on our team!”
The 10-under card is just the third of its kind for Arizona State in the Golfstat era. Of the other two, only Paul Casey’s 10-under 60 in the 1999 Pac-10 Championship came in postseason play.
Sources can confirm… that’ll play??
Preston Summerhays ??? is now just the fifth Sun Devil to fire a 62 or better in the Golfstat era. All four of our scorers went under 70 in the opening round.
