Two Sun Devils Inside Top-10, Sun Devils in Second in Las Vegas


The second round of the Las Vegas Regional saw all five Sun Devils shoot in red figures, combining for a round 12-under 276 (68-68-70-70=276/-12). Arizona State is currently at 38-under par (262-276=538) only four strokes behind conference rival Stanford going into the final round at Bear’s Best Las Vegas. The top five teams in the Las Vegas Regional will qualify for Grayhawk Golf Club, host of the NCAA Championship for the Women’s and Men’s national championships for the third straight year.

“The guys aren’t happy with the day. We want the best score every day and today we got beat by a lot,” said Head Coach Matt Thurmond. “In a couple of hours, we will start to think about tomorrow and we will come out aggressive and play to win.”

Preston Summerhays’ continues to lead the way for the Sun Devils with a two-under 70 to put him at 12-under for the tournament, which places him in fifth heading into Wednesday’s final round, only two strokes behind the leader. He managed to birdie three of his last seven holes to shoot two-under on the back nine.

The Arizona native is not alone atop the leader board with fellow teammates Josele Ballester shooting a two-under 70, with four birdies on the back nine to be tied for sixth at 10-under and freshman Michael Mjaaseth firing a four-under 68 to be tied for 11th at 9-under. The Spaniard ranks third in the field on the par 4’s through two rounds going six-under, keeping pace with two Stanford golfers.

Senior Ryggs Johnston jumped nine spots up the leader board tying the team-low with a four-under 68 to be tied for 24th at six-under for the tournament. Johnston’s round included five birdies and an eagle, shooting a 31 in his first nine holes, tied for second best on the day against the field.
