SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – During the second day of play at the NCAA Championships, the 26th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team saw a five-shot improvement on its first-round score, but the Cavaliers could not make up any ground of the field and are in 25th place after 36 holes of play. UVA shot 5-over 293 for a two-day total of 15-over 591 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Following’s Sunday’s third round of stroke play, the field will be cut to the top 15 teams and top nine individuals not associated with one of those teams for Monday’s final round of stroke play. The final round will decide the individual champion and the eight teams that advance to match play portion of the championship.

Virginia was once again led by sophomore Amanda Sambach who finished her day at 1-under 71. That was her 10th consecutive round of shooting under par. The ACC Individual Champion is tied for 17th place at 3-under 141.

Starting on the 10th tee, Sambach carded eight pars on her first nine holes along with one bogey. A second bogey on her 12th hole put her at 2-over. She then reeled off three birdies over a four-hole stretch and made pars on her final two holes.

UVA’s Rebecca Skoler and Celeste Valinho each posted scores of 1-over 73 on Saturday. Skoler is in 91st place at 5-over 149 while Valinho is 112th at 151. Also in 112th place is Megan Propeck, who shot 77 during the second round. Riley Smyth substituted into the lineup for Jennifer Cleary and produced a counting score of 4-over 76 for UVA.

Wake Forest stands atop the leaderboard after Saturday at 17-under 559, two shots ahead of top-ranked Stanford. The Demon Deacons’ Lauren Walsh leads the individual field after two rounds at 10-under 134.

UVA will tee off Sunday at 12:37 p.m. MST while paired with Augusta and Northwestern. Those teams will start play from the 10th tee.
