Virginia Women's Golf | Virginia Ends NCAA Play in 24th Place

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The 26th-ranked Virginia women’s golf team wrapped up its appearance at the 2023 NCAA Championships by tying with No. 19 Clemson for 24th-place. The Cavaliers shot 14-over 302 during Sunday’s third round and did not make the 15-team cut for the final round of stroke play on Monday that determines the eight squads for match play.

A day after nine teams turned in under-par scores, Grayhawk Golf Club was a tougher challenge during the third round as all 30 teams shot over par.

UVA was led during the final round by Cavalier graduate student Riley Smyth, who shot 1-under 71. Playing her final round at Virginia, Smyth had two eagles, two birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey. Smyth did not have a place showing after substituting into the lineup following the tournament’s opening round.

UVA sophomore Amanda Sambach was the team’s top finisher, placing 54th. Sambach had her toughest day on the course, shooting 7-over 79, her first over-par round in her last 11 outings.

Rebecca Skoler was UVA’s second-best finisher, coming in 89th at 9-over 225. She shot 4-over 76 during the third round. Megan Propeck, playing in her first NCAA Championship, was 111th at 12-over 228. He finished with a score of 77 on Sunday. Celeste Valinho was 113th at 229. She shot 78 during the final round.

Top-ranked Stanford made its way to the top of the leaderboard at 13-under 851. The Cardinal shot 2-over 290 on Sunday. USC’s Catherine Park leads the field for medalist honors at 10-under 206. She has a two-shot lead heading into Monday’s final round of stroke play.

This was the 13th time in the 20-year history of the Virginia program the Cavaliers advanced to the NCAA Championships.
