Heflin, Li & Smith Finish T6 at Sea Island Women’s Amateur


ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Sea Island Women’s Amateur concluded on Thursday with all three members of the Duke women’s golf team – Rylie Heflin, Andie Smith and Katie Li – placing tied for sixth overall at the Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Ga.

All three Blue Devils shot under par in the final round led by Li with a 5-under, 65, while Smith posted a 2-under, 68, and Heflin a 1-under, 69.  The trio finished the week at 4-under, 206, and were five shots behind individual medalist Morgan Ketchum (201).

Heflin, who hails from Avondale, Pa., closed the final two days at 5-under-par to finish with rounds of 71, 66 and 69.  She finished strong Thursday with birdies on No. 14, No. 15 and No. 17 to close with a 69.  Heflin’s round Wednesday was almost flawless as she posted five birdies, 12 pars and one bogey.  At one point, she birdied four straight holes on the front nine on her way to shooting 4-under, 66.  

After totaling back-to-back rounds of 69 the first two days, Smith caught fire on the back nine Thursday as she birdied holes No. 11, No. 13, No. 15 and No. 16 on her way to finishing with a 2-under, 68.  It marked the second-consecutive year the Hobe Sound, Fla., product has finished in the top six as she was tied for fifth a year ago.  

A native of Basking Ridge, N.J., Li registered rounds of 69 and 72 the first two days and was even par through her first nine holes in the final round.  She then got hot with birdies on No. 10, No. 11, No. 15, No. 16 and No. 17 to shoot 30 on the final nine.  Li finished with a 5-under, 65, to close the event.

Heflin finished with 13 birdies over the 54 holes to rank tied for second, while Smith and Li registered 10 each.
