Card Sits Sixth at Stephens Cup

DALLAS – Stanford men’s golf closed out just short of two rounds of golf on Monday at the Jackson T. Stephens Cup, as freshman tandem Ethan Gao and Kush Arora lead the way for the Cardinal. Stanford sits 19-under after day one, good for sixth in the team standings.

Stanford got out to a scorching start in round one, with Gao, Arora, Karl Vilips and Barclay Brown all sitting in the top-20 through the first trip around Trinity Forest Golf Club. Gao dazzled with seven birdies and one bogey for the Cardinal’s best round of the day, a 6-under 66. Vilips trailed one stroke behind with a 67, while Arora shot 3-under with seven birdies, two bogeys, and a double-bogey. The Cardinal shot a 15-under 279 in round one, good for third in the standings behind LSU and Florida State.

The Cardinal came back down to earth a bit in the second round, shooting 14 birdies in round two compared to 28 in the opening 18 holes. Arora notched a nearly identical scorecard in his second pass around the course for a second round team-best 67. Jake Beber-Frankel shaved three strokes off his first round score with a 2-under 70, scoring an eagle, four birdies and two bogeys. Gao, Arora, and Brown had their rounds shortened due to darkness, and will resume in the morning.

Stanford held the second most birdies as a team (43) behind only Florida State, with Arora tied for the most individual birdies (14) with Florida State’s Gray Albright.

The final round of stroke play at the Stephens Cup, along with the conclusion of round two, takes place tomorrow morning. Stanford will then be paired for match play action based on final stroke play standings, which will take place on Wednesday.
