David Ford and Maxwell Ford both shot 3-under-par 69s Monday as the University of North Carolina earned the No. 2 seed in match play in the 2023 East Lake Cup at the Atlanta Athletic Club.
The Tar Heels finished two shots behind Florida State in the only round of stroke play in the competition, which includes the four semifinalists from the 2023 NCAA Championship last May.
The Seminoles shot 5-under 283, the Tar Heels finished 3-under 285, Georgia Tech shot 290 and national champion Florida shot 292.
UNC will play Georgia Tech in Tuesday’s semifinal match with the Seminoles and Gators squaring off in the other. Those are the same matchups from last season’s NCAA semifinals in Scottsdale, Ariz. The Yellow Jackets edged the Tar Heels, 3-2, to advance to the championship, where Florida prevailed to win the title.
The Fords both birdied the 18th hole to shoot matching 69s. They tied for second, one shot behind Georgia Tech freshman Kale Fontenot.
David Ford was 1 over par through eight, but played 4 under with no bogeys over his last 10 holes. His twin brother, Maxwell, was 1 over through four holes and made four birdies and no bogeys over his final 14 holes.
UNC’s Kenan Poole tied for 11th with a 73, Austin Greaser shot 2-over 74 and Peter Fountain shot 77.
Tuesday’s semifinal pairings include:
Peter Fountain vs. Carson Kim
Austin Greaser vs. Bartley Forrester
David Ford vs. Hiroshi Tai
Maxwell Ford vs. Kale Fontenot
Kenan Poole vs. Christo Lamprecht
The David Ford match against Tai is the only repeat from the 2023 NCAA semifinals. Ford broke a tie with a birdie on the 16th hole and halved the next two for a 1 up win over Tai.
