Golf Kicks Off on the Kohala Coast


KOHALA COAST, Hawaii – Senior Karl Vilips shoot a 4-under 68 paced the Cardinal through Thursday’s opening round at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate, as Stanford sits tied-10th in the team standings after day one. 

Vilips registered five birdies and a lone bogey in the first trip around the Mauna Lani North Course to finish the day tied for 24th, six shots behind leader Preston Stout of Oklahoma State. 

Barclay Brown shot a 3-under 69 in his first round of action, using a late-round eagle on the par-5 tenth hole to jump into the top-50 of the individual standings late in the day. 

It was an up-and-down day for PGA Tour U’s top-ranked Michael Thorbjornsen in his return to collegiate action, with three bogeys and a double bogey hampering a seven birdie round for the Wellesley, Mass., native as he finished 2-under after round one. Jake Bebr-Frankel also shot a 70 in his opening 18 holes with five birdies and three bogeys. 

Dean Greyserman finished the day at even par as an individual competitor, while Sean-Karl Dobson was Stanford’s non-scoring round after turning in a 2-over 74. 

Second round action resumes tomorrow morning with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start.
