NEW PROVIDENCE, Bahamas – The Illinois women’s golf team ended the first round of the Nexus Collegiate in fifth after carding a first round total of 293 (+5).

Yurang Li and Isabel Sy are both tied for third after posting an opening round 70 (-2), sitting just two strokes off of the lead.

Li, competing in her first tournament with the Orange and Blue, rolled home six birdies on the day, three each on the front and back nine. The Fullerton, Calif., was one of five players to record six birdies, which is the most among the field.

Sy, hunting for her fourth-straight Top 5 finish, tallied an even 36 on the back before going 1-under on the front. The senior was also one of six players to record an eagle during the day.

Anna Ritter also sits in the top half of the leaderboard after her opening round of 75 (+3). Ritter carded a 1-under, bogey-free 35 on the back nine to begin her round and collected 13 pars, tied for fourth-most among the field.

Lexanne Halama is tied for 46th after a 78 (+6), where she recorded a tournament-leading 16 pars along the way.

Sophia Sulkar, competing individually, is tied for 59th after her opening round 82 (+10) and Erica Lee is tied for 61st after her first round total of 83 (+11).

Kentucky sits atop the leaderboard at 3-under (285), with the Wildcats’ Laney Frye leading individually at 4-under.

The Fighting Illini will be back in action tomorrow, with tee times beginning at 6:45 a.m. CT.
