Kanpai Named Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week


ROSEMONT, IL — Sophomore Nicha Kanpai of the Maryland women’s golf team was named Big Ten Co-Golfer of the Week Wednesday for her first career weekly honor. Kanpai shares the honor with Illinois’ Isabel Sy and Wisconsin’s Chloe Chan.

Kanpai won her first individual title Tuesday at the Chevron Collegiate at the Golf Club of Houston in Humble, Texas. She tied with Illinois’ Isabel Sy for the individual title with a score of 204 (69-66-69). Her second round score of 66 and 54-hole score of 204 were both career-bests. Her score of 204 also set a program record. 

As a team, the Terrapins finished in second of 16 teams competing with a score of 835, which smashed the previous program record of 847 set by the Terrapins last season. The Terps’ shot a 279 in the first round, then a 275 in the second round Monday, which also set a program record. They shot a 281 Tuesday and finished 29 strokes under par and just four strokes behind SMU. 

Next, the Terrapins will compete in the Battle at Briar’s Creek March 11-12 in Kiawah Island, S.C.
