COLUMBUS, Ga. – Vanderbilt men’s golfers Gordon Sargent and Cole Sherwood were each named to the top-15 watch list for the 2024 Fred Haskins Award presented by Stifel, as announced by The Haskins Foundation Monday.
Vanderbilt was one of two colleges to have multiple golfers on the top-15 Haskins Award watch list, joining fellow SEC member Auburn.
Sargent, the 2022 NCAA individual champion, is off to another strong start this spring. The junior finished in a tie for second at the Watersound Invitational, as he carded 9-under 207 to help the Commodores successfully defend their team title at the event. Sargent holds a team-best scoring average of 68.83 during the 2023-24 season. He has collected three top-five finishes and has finished under par in 11 of his 12 rounds so far this season. Recently, Sargent earned his PGA Tour Card via the PGA Tour University program. During the summer, Sargent was awarded the Mark H. McCormack Medal, given to the world’s top men’s amateur player. The junior has received exemptions into the 2024 U.S. Open and The Open Championship.
Sherwood had a fabulous fall, which saw him win the individual title at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational during the first week of October. He picked up where he left off to open the spring, as Sherwood carded 7-under 207 to finish in a tie for fifth at the Watersound Invitational. This season, the two-time All-American has posted a scoring average of 69.71 through five tournaments and has collected three top-five finishes. Sherwood also placed second at the St Andrews Links Collegiate to help Vanderbilt capture the team title at the Home of Golf. He is currently eighth in the PGA Tour U. rankings.
Celebrating its 54th year, the Haskins Award is given annually to the top male U.S. collegiate golfer as voted on by only college golfers, coaches and members of the golf media. Past winners of the award have captured 33 major championships and have won more than 400 professional tournaments around the world.
The list of past winners includes Brad Faxon (1983), Phil Mickelson (1990, 91, 92), Tiger Woods (1996), Matt Kuchar (1998), Patrick Cantlay (2011), Justin Thomas (2012) and Sahith Theegala (2020). The reigning Haskins winner is Ludvig Aberg of Texas Tech.
