Michigan State, Katie Lu Lead the Field at the Briar’s Creek Invitational


East Lansing, Mich. – Junior Katie Lu has the individual lead and three Michigan State women’s golfers are among the top-15 overall as the Spartans lead the field of 17 teams at the Briar’s Creek Invitational, being played at the Golf Club of Briar’s Creek in Johns Island, S.C.

The Spartans fired a 10-under par 566 (284-282) and hold a six-shot lead on the field entering the final day of play on Tuesday.

Michigan State will tee off on Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m., playing alongside Illinois, Rutgers and UCF.

MSU leads the field at 10-over par 566, with Illinois second at 4-under par 572, followed by Rutgers in third place at 5-over par 581, UCF in fourth at 6-over par 582 and Florida rounds at the top-five teams at 7-over par 583.

Day One Results

Lu fired an 8-under par 136 over two rounds and holds a one-shot lead over Isable Sy of Illinois. Lu shot a 3-under par 69 in the opening round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5, 444-yard seventh hole and three birdies. She finished the second round at 5-under par 67. Lu is in second place among all golfers with 10 birdies.

Classmate Brooke Biermann is just two shots back in third place at 6-under par 138 (68-70). Biermann carded a 4-under par 68 in the first round, with five birdies, and followed that up with a 2-under par 70.

Senior Leila Raines is tied for 13th place at even-par 144 (73-71), closing her day out with a 1-under par 71.

Sophomore Paula Balanzategui is tied for 51st place at 6-over par 150 (76-74), while junior Shannon Kennedy is tied for 60th place at 8-ovre par 152.

Playing as an individual, senior Valentina Rossi is tied for 98th place at 17-over par 161 (84-77).
