PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – Virginia’s Deven Patel shot 1-under 71 during the final round of The Hayt Collegiate to pick up his first collegiate win. Patel finished the tournament at 3-under 213 to better Duke’s Ethan Evans and Alabama’s Canon Claycomb by a single stroke. He helped UVA move up to a third-place finish at the 14-team tournament held at Sawgrass Country Club.
The 13th-ranked Cavaliers shot 3-under 285 during Monday’s final round, the low round for the day, to finish the event at 4-over 868. Top-ranked North Carolina won at 861 while Alabama was second at 865.
Patel, who made birdie on his final hole, played the final two rounds at 5-under par. It was his second top-10 finish this season. He becomes the second Cavalier to earn medalist honors at an event this season. Bryan Lee was co-medalist at the Puerto Rico Classic.

Paul Chang had UVA’s best final-round score, shooting 2-under 70 to move up to 25th place at 5-over 221. Ben James was the Hoos’ number-two scorer at 1-over 217. He shot 73 during the final round to place 11th. Bryan Lee was 27th at 222 thanks to a final round result of 1-under 71. Chris Fosdick rounded out the UVA scoring with a 35th-place finish at 224. He shot 76 on Tuesday.
Grayson Wotnosky, competing as an individual, also tied for 35th place at 224. He had a final-round score of 74.
UVA heads to Georgia this weekend for the Linger Longer Invitational. Play runs Sunday through Tuesday at the Great Waters Course at Reynolds.
