Birdies for Babies Moves Past 8K Mark for Season

DURHAM – With the spring 2024 campaign in full swing for Duke men’s and women’s golf, the Birdies for Babies program has now eclipsed the $8,000 mark for the 2023-24 season.  The program supports the kids at the Duke Children’s Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Units.

If you have not donated yet for the season, there is still time to help the kids at the Duke Children’s Hospital.  One-time donations and pledges are both available.

So far this season, Duke has raised $8,081.50 and has now brought in an impressive $115,885 over the seven years since the program was established.

If you are interested in supporting Duke’s partnership with Duke Children’s, you can pledge for each birdie made during the season or make a one-time donation.  Pledges start at $0.50 and higher increments are welcome.  If the Blue Devils register an eagle (counts as two birdies), albatross (three birdies) or hole-in-one (four birdies), they will count as stated.

The creation of the Birdies for Babies program was spearheaded by former Duke women’s golf standout Virginia Elena Carta.  A native of Udine, Italy, Carta was a four-time All-ACC selection and the 2016 NCAA Individual Champion.  The 2016 WGCA All-America and Honda Award winner turned in an NCAA-record 16-under-par ledger of 272 as a rookie to register her first collegiate victory.  She became one of only four Blue Devils to win both a NCAA Individual and team NCAA title.

Next up for the men’s golf program will be the Valspar Collegiate Invitational March 25-26 in Palm City, Fla.  The women’s team will compete in Tallahassee, Fla., this weekend in the Florida State Match Up on March 15-17.
