After claiming her first collegiate title on Tuesday, freshman Fleur van Beek of the University of Missouri women’s golf team was honored with SEC Freshman of the Week accolades, announced on Thursday.
The first Mizzou freshman to win individual medalist honors since 1997, van Beek carded a three-under 213 at the Tulane Classic over three rounds – finishing two strokes ahead of second for the individual crown. The rookie was the only golfer in the 100-player field to finish under par in all three rounds over the weekend as she carded 10 birdies and just seven bogeys over the 54-hole tournament.
Overall, van Beek helped the Tigers to a third-place team finish at Tulane. The rookie has appeared in all six events for Mizzou this season with six rounds under par and a 73.38 stroke average.
After her title performance, van Beek is the first MU rookie to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors since Emma Allen did so in 2016. It also marks the first time in program history that the Tigers earned Golfer and Freshman of the Week accolades in the same season as Melanie Walker earned the league’s Golfer of the Week honors earlier in the year.
The Tigers return to action tomorrow, competing at the MountainView Collegiate in Arizona. The three-day tournament begins Friday morning with 9:45 a.m. CT tee times.
