Lopez-Lanchares Named SEC Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — For the second consecutive tournament, Tennessee freshman Martina Lopez-Lanchares earned SEC Freshman of the Week honors, the conference announced Wednesday.

Lopez-Lanchares, a native of San Sebastián, Spain, has posted the two best performances of her young career at the Chevron Collegiate and most recently at the MountainView Collegiate. In both instances, she shot 3-under (213) and shot the lowest among those competing as individuals.

At the MountainView Collegiate, the freshman shot par or better in all three rounds, highlighted by a 3-under (69) in round two at The Preserve Golf Club in Tuscon, Arizona. Her par-4 average of 3.90 was the third-lowest score in the tournament, and her 12 birdies ranked eighth.

With the honor, Lopez-Lanchares becomes the first Lady Vol to win multiple SEC Freshman of the Week honors. She is one of four active Tennessee golfers to have won the award, joining Manassanan Chotikabhukkana (2022-23), Caroline Patterson (2022-23) and Kayla Holden (2020-21).

The Lady Vols are back in action Friday, March 22, competing in the final regular season tournament of the year in Clemson, South Carolina.
