Clemson, SC—Jonathan Nielsen shot a four-under par 68 and Thomas Higgins added a three-under 69 to lead Clemson to a sixth place finish on Tuesday at the Linger Longer Invitational at Great Waters Course in Eatonton, Ga.
Nielsen finished with a seven-under par 209 for the 54 holes, good enough for sixth place individually, his fourth top eight finish this season. Nielsen had an opening round 64, the low round of the year by a Clemson golfer. He had a Clemson record tying two eagles in that round. Nielsen finished with 12 birdies and two eagles and a team best 4.42 stroke average on the par five holes.
Clemson made a strong comeback on the front nine, its second nine of the day. The Tigers were in 10th place near the end of its first nine, then played the second nine at three-under par to improve four spots in the standings.
Clemson finished the tournament with a team score of 870 for the 54 holes, six over par. Clemson finished sixth out of the 14 teams in the tournament, giving Clemson a 33-13-1 against the field this spring.
Higgins round of 69 included a career best 31 on the front nine, his second nine of the day. He had five birdies and four pars on that front nine. The native of Ireland finished with 12 birdies for the tournament tied for his most in a tournament this year. His 217 score of 54 holes was good enough for 34th place in the individual race.
Andrew Swanson was Clemson’s third best player at the tournament with a 220 score, four over par on the par 72 course that measured 7,436 yards for the 54 holes. Alberto Dominguez finished with a 223 score for the three rounds, seven over par and in 55th place. Kian Rose shot a 230 for the tournament.
Clemson will be off for the rest of spring break this week and continue its season March 29-31 at The Goodwin at The TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.
