AIKEN, S.C. – The ninth-ranked Duke women’s golf program opened action Monday at the Old Barnwell Match Play with a pair of victories over 18th-ranked Florida State and Mississippi State, which was being contested at Old Barnwell in Aiken, S.C.
Graduate student Emma McMyler, senior Phoebe Brinker and senior Anne Chen each collected two wins on the day to pace the Blue Devils. McMyler’s wins came against the No. 2 (Julia Lopez Ramirez) and No. 30 ranked (Charlotte Heath) golfers in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).
Duke defeated the Seminoles, 3-2, and closed the afternoon with a 5-0 win over the Bulldogs.
How It Happened – Match One vs. Florida State
- In the morning, the Blue Devils opened action against 18th-ranked Florida State off hole No. 10.
- Duke jumped out to hot starts on its final two groupings behind senior Phoebe Brinker and graduate student Emma McMyler.
- Brinker, who went off fourth, faced Madison Hewlett of the Seminoles and started quick by winning the first two holes.After winning holes No. 14 and No. 15, Brinker took a 3UP advantage.The lead grew to 6UP through nine holes, before Brinker closed the match with a 4&3 victory, after a par on hole No. 16.
- A native of San Antonio, Texas, McMyler never trailed in her match with Charlotte Heath.McMyler won the first hole with a 15-foot par and then won holes No. 12 and No. 13 to go ahead, 3UP.Heath battled back with wins on holes No. 15 and No. 16 to cut the lead to 1UP.Both golfers birdied No. 1 as McMyler got up-and-down from 40 yards and then McMyler posted another birdie on No. 2 to go back ahead, 2UP.McMyler parred No. 4 to go ahead 3UP and eventually parred No. 8 to win, 2&1.
- Duke sophomore Andie Smith went out first against Mirabel Ting.Ting led for seven out of the first 10 holes, before Smith battled back.Smith rolled in a birdie on No. 2 and parred No. 3 to go from being down a hole to 1UP.A bogey by Smith on No. 4 tied the match and another bogey on No. 6 gave Ting the 1UP lead again, before winning 3&1 for the Seminoles.
- Florida State got another point on the board as Lottie Woad went up against Duke rookie Katie Li.Woad led by as many as 2UP through three holes, but Li was able to tie the match as she won No. 13 and No. 16.The match remained tied until Woad won the second and third holes to take a 2UP…
