Barcos Posts Second-Place Finish for Utah Golf at Duck Invite

EUGENE, Ore. – Javier Barcos posted his highest finish of the 2023-24 season and matched the second-best performance of his Utah career by taking second place on Tuesday, the final day for the University of Utah men’s golf team at the Duck Invite, which concluded with 18 holes at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Ore.

“Overall, it was a really good tournament for us,” said coach Garrett Clegg. “We have some things to clean up for sure, but I’m really happy with how our team battled. Each player fought for every last shot, even when things were getting really tough and that’s a big step forward. I’m really pumped for Javi as well; he had a great tournament!”

The University of Utah men’s golf team finished The Duck Invite in fourth place, shooting 6-over on Tuesday and +11 for the two-day tournament. The Utes hit the 863 mark, their third-best team score of the season.

Barcos was on his game in Eugene and finished the final 18 holes on a high note, shooting 2-under, which matches his first-round performance as well. The senior climbed three spots on the leaderboard with Tuesday’s score to stand alone in second. Barcos started off strong, capturing a birdie on the second hole and rounding out the front nine at even par. Finding his form in the back nine, he collected four more birdies, including back-to-back ones on the 16th and 17th holes. His overall mark of 3-under makes this his fifth tournament finishing under par during his senior campaign.

Sergio Jimenez was able to knock a couple strokes off his round two score, shooting 2-over for the day and 3-over for the tournament. He put up a birdie on the second hole and added six pars before beginning the back nine with another birdie. He would add one more red score before entering the clubhouse tied for 16th, picking up his fifth top 20 performance of the year.

Braxton Watts concluded the afternoon at 3-over, putting his 54-hole mark at 5-over, landing him in a deadlock for 24th. His 35 pars in Eugene were Utah’s second-most, trailing only Brandon Robison, who collected 38 and was 3-over on Tuesday and whose final round was highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 sixth. Gabriel Palacios finished tied for 73rd.
