Clemson, SC—Clemson will be one of 31 teams competing for the championship of the 54th Goodwin men’s golf tournament at famed TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, Ca. this weekend. The tournament will run March 28-30, Thursday through Saturday with 18 holes each day on the par 70 course that was the site of the 2020 PGA Championship.
Stanford is the host school of the tournament that is named in honor of former Stanford Head Coach Wally Goodwin, who led the program from 1987-2000 and guided the program to the 1994 NCAA Championship. Among the players he recruited and coached was Tiger Woods. Sixteen Stanford players have won this tournament, including Tom Watson, but not Woods.
The field will include nine schools from the Pac 12, including national programs UCLA, USC, Oregon, Stanford and California. The later two programs will be in the ACC with Clemson at this time next year. The truly national field includes Clemson and Georgia Tech from the ACC, Georgia and Tennessee from the SEC, and TCU and BYU from the Big 12.
Clemson will begin play Thursday morning between 8 am and 8:48 am Pacific time and begin play on Friday between 1:05 pm and 1:53 pm Pacific time. The 31 schools will play in foursomes throughout the 54 hole event. Clemson will play with teams from San Francisco, TCU and Utah on Thursday and Friday.
This will be Clemson’s fifth tournament of the spring portion of the schedule, its first all-time appearance at The Goodwin. Clemson began the spring with a victory at the Battle of Briar’s Creek on John’s Island, SC. The Tigers have a 33-13-1 record in the spring and will look to enhance that record against the largest regular season field in men’s college golf.
Leading the way for Clemson will be senior Jonathan Nielsen, who has a 71.05 stroke average and 12 under-par rounds for the year. He has four top eight finishes this year, including a sixth place at the Linger Longer just 10 days ago when he shot a 209 for the 54 holes.
Junior Andrew Swanson is second on the team in stroke average at 72.45. He has seven under-par rounds this year and a pair of top 10s. Swanson’s second place finish at Briar’s Creek was a big reason for that important team victory. This will be Swanson’s 22nd career tournament.
Sophomore Thomas Higgins will be Clemson’s third man in the order with a 72.59 stroke average, while Alberto Dominguez is close behind with a 72.65 average. Higgins has a pair of top 10s this year while…
