Virginia Athletics | UVA Heads to Georgia for 52nd Playing of Liz Murphey Collegiate

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 22nd-ranked Virginia women’s golf team heads to Georgia this weekend for the Bulldogs’ Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic that runs March 29-30. The two-day, 54-hole tournament is held at the University of Georgia Golf Course (par 72, 6,351 yards) in Athens.

Each day starts at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start on Friday and fixed tee times on Saturday. Virginia will be paired with Georgia and Michigan during Friday’s play.

Now in its 52nd year, the tournament began in 1973 as the Georgia Invitational before becoming the Women’s Southern Intercollegiates from 1977-94. In 1995, the tourney was renamed in honor of Liz Murphey, UGA’s Hall of Fame golf coach and long-time Senior Woman Administrator.

This year’s field includes (with NCAA ranking): Alabama (37), Auburn (10), Augusta, Charleston, Emory, Florida (15), Georgia (25), Georgia Southern, Illinois, Kansas State, Michigan (35), Missouri, N.C. State, San Diego State and SMU (24).

Virginia’s lineup features Amanda Sambach, Maline Kraus, Rebecca Skoler, Megan Propeck and Jaclyn LaHa. Celeste Valinho will compete as an individual.

Sambach enters the event as the No. 5 player in the nation. She leads UVA with a 70.95 stroke average and has five top-10 finishes in seven tournamnts this season.
