Men’s Golf Ready for Big Ten Championships

Men's Golf Ready for Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Rutgers men’s golf is set to compete in the 2024 Big Ten Championships hosted by Ohio State University.

The Scarlet Knights are coming off an impressive spring schedule that includes four top-ten finishes and the best round in school history at the Colleton River Collegiate. Rutgers faced many Big Ten foe this year, beating Michigan State, Minnesota and Penn State twice, along with a win against No. 45 Indiana and the first even win in program history against No. 18 Illinois.

“I think it’s just going to take all five guys that week just to be hyper-focused,” co-captain Luke Wells said about winning the Big Ten Championships. “Our players have to be ready for the moment and not let the moment get too big and just go play golf. We know how to play, we’ve all played well in tournaments this year, we’ve all had top-20 finishes, a lot of us have had top-10 finishes. If we can get three out of four guys, or four out of five guys in the top-15. It’s going to be a very special week and it’s going to give us a great run.”

Rutgers will face ten Big Ten opponents currently ranked in the top 100 nationally, and will use this opportunity to try and contend for their first NCAA berth in 20 years.

“The college golf landscape has changed so much even since that point. We have 306 Division I teams,” head coach Rob Shutte said. “The growth of the game is sky-high. The challenges to get to NCAA’s as a northeast program is not easy. We have three guys who are graduating this year that have a huge impact on the program, Luke (Wells), Xavier (Marcoux), and Rhett (Sellers). For them to finish off and to have that on their resume that they were able to get us over the hump for that first one would be special for them especially putting all those years into the program. If we don’t get there, they’re leaving their mark but we’re right on the bubble so its exciting to have a chance as we play out the last two.”

The Big Ten Championships will take place at Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio for the first time since 1928. The course plays at a par 70 and spans 7,240 yards.

The Scarlet Knights will have a practice round on Thursday before a 9:00 AM tee time on Friday for round one. Rounds two and three will follow on Saturday and Sunday.
